With the continuous increase in production and expansion of enterprises, the standardization and efficiency of enterprise warehouses have naturally been put on the agenda. Shelves generally refer to racks for storing goods. Shelves are storage equipment used to store packaged items.

The emergence of the shelf industry as a distinct sector can be traced back to the 1980s and 1990s. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, German and Hong Kong enterprises concentrated on establishing warehousing equipment companies along the Shanghai-Nanjing route, primarily producing warehouse shelves. Investors gradually saw the development prospects of the shelf industry in China. Subsequently, Swiss enterprises successively established shelf companies in Shanghai, and shelf manufacturing technology has since developed domestically. As China's local shelf manufacturing technology gradually improved, more foreign-funded enterprises chose to procure local shelves in order to save costs, and the shelf industry in China emerged accordingly.

People are familiar with shelves, ranging from the medicine cabinets in ancient Chinese herbal pharmacies, to various types of shelves used in modern shopping malls and stores, to shelves made of steel or more advanced materials in large three-dimensional warehouses.

The development of modern logistics serves as the prerequisite for the emergence and growth of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), aligning with the advancements in industry and technology. Modern large-scale production increasingly promotes the socialization, specialization, and centralization of industrial production. The high degree of mechanization and automation in production inevitably demands timely, rapid, and accurate supply and distribution of materials. This has spurred the rapid development of AS/RS technology, which has become a symbol of high technology in factory design.

The independent export of storage racks began in 2000, and prior to that, they were mainly exported through foreign trade companies as agents. Most of China's exports were pallet racks and high-level heavy-duty racks, while the export of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), which require high installation services, was relatively small. The storage racks used in automated warehouses in China have reached international standards. They can achieve first-in, first-out (FIFO) and one-time replenishment, multiple pickings, and high storage efficiency.
